전통적으로 자연어 처리는 기호주의(Symbolism) 파라다임(paradigm)하에서 연구가 되어 왔다. 최근들어 성공적으로 응용되고 있는 신경망 기술에 의거하여 연결주의(connectionism)가 자연어 처리의 새로운 파라다임으로 등장하였으나 두 파라다임의 종합적이고 체계적인 비교 연구는 아직 미흡한 실정이다. 본 논문은 여태까지 연구된 연결주의 자연어 처리 이론들을 기호주의 이론들과 체계적으로 비교 분석하여 두 파라다임의 특성을 종합적으로 고찰한다. 아울러 자연어 처리에 필요한 여러 기능들을 설계 구현하는데 있어서 각각의 파라다임의 적합성을 검토하여 향후 자연어 처리 연구를 위한 두 파라다임의 선택적인 적용의 기준을 제시한다.

(English Abstract) |
Natural language research has long been conducted under the symbol processing paradigm. Even though recent resurrection of neural network introduces a connectionism as a new paradigm for natural language research, a systematic and comprehensive comparative study of both paradigms is still called for. In this paper, previous connectionist natural language research results are analyzed and both paradigms are compared and contrasted. We explain the major features of connectionism and symbolism for knowledge represenation and induce strong and weak features of both paradigms to implement several functionalities of a natural language system.
